The Buckinghamshire town of Stony Stratford lies within the borough of Milton Keynes and can trace its history back to the Romans when it enjoyed a strategically important position on the Roman Road of Watling Street. It staged a solitary race meeting on Tuesday 4th April 1848 on farmland belonging to Mr Ivens of Shenley. A large concourse of people enjoyed fine weather and competitive steeplechasing when a field of five contested the main event. The race was won by Mr Bull’s Tobacconist, beating Wildboy and The Hack. A large party adjourned to Mr Wilmire’s Bull Inn, Stony Stratford, where dinner was provided, with Mr Ivens in the chair. |
